Grade-level crossing at Gov ave and MLK best choice for trail crossing
Fayetteville is extending its popular and well-used trail system. The trail must cross Martin
Luther King Jr. Boulevard, which is a busy street. Various means of crossing the street have
been discussed, such as a tunnel, an overpass, or a surface crossing. The following diagrams,
photographs, and sketches pose the questions:
1. Is it possible to construct a well-designed crossing at street level that will symbolically
connect South Fayetteville with the Downtown? Can the installation of a small civic
monument and plaza extend the elegance and prosperity of the downtown into South
Fayetteville?
2. Can we create a civic monument that will make an explicit symbolic connection between
the sacrifices of our veterans and the martyrdom of Dr. King?
3. Is the timing right to install a street crossing that will begin the implementation of
important Master Street Plan features such as shade trees and generous sidewalks? Is
MLK Boulevard doomed to its current condition that only serves the needs of
motorists? Is the current condition of MLK an appropriate memorial to the life of Dr.
Martin Luther King, Jr.?
4. Can a surface crossing be made safe for pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists? Does
having the crossing at street level increase awareness of alternate forms of
transportation?
5. Would the businesses located at the corner of Government Avenue and MLK Boulevard,
such as Heartwood Gallery, Ease Art Supply, and Alston Hair Salon benefit from the
additional foot traffic and bicycle traffic? Would their increased sales provide a Return
on Investment for the City of
